Musk Oxen are a type of ox. They are named for the strong, musky smell the males produce. They are usually considered too large to hunt, but some bears in the Seekers series have learned how to hunt them by hunting in large groups.

History

In The Original Series arc

The Last Wilderness

They are hunted by Toklo and Kallik. Toklo and Kallik plan to scare the musk ox so the other bear can catch it. The musk oxen are so large that it takes both Toklo and Kallik to kill it.

Spirits in the Stars

When Ujurak, Toklo, Lusa, and Kallik are traveling to Star Island, they see musk oxen. They are very large, so the four bears all work together to catch it, with Lusa and Ujurak roaring to scare it and Kallik and Toklo attacking it and killing it.

The four bears teach the bears of Star Island how to hunt musk oxen when the bears can't eat seals, as they are sick. The bears are initially surprised, as they had never thought of hunting the large animals, or even hunting in groups. The bears all work together and succeed in catching it. Tunerq says that the musk oxen will feed all of the bears.

Toward the end of the book, Ujurak become a musk ox to save his friends from an avalanche, but after the avalanche, Ujurak dies.

In the Return to the Wild arc

Island of Shadows

The bears attempt to separate a calf from the herd so that they can kill it. The herd are partly responsible for the calf's death, since they were trampling on it trying to protect it. During the attack, Lusa was nearly killed by a musk ox.
