Pine Martens are small, weasel-like creatures.
General Information[]
- Pine martens are long, slender members of the weasel family, about the size of a mink with rounded ears, short limbs, and a bushy tail. Their heads are triangular shaped, and their noses are sharp. Their fur ranges from yellowish buff to tawny brown and black. They are related to weasels, minks, stoats, ermines, wolverines, badgers and otters.[4]
- Generally, pine martens consume small rodents such as voles, mice and shrews, along with amphibians and domestic fowl occasionally. [5] In winter, they hunt snow hares and rabbits, using a technique similar to a weasel to kill it's prey. Their summer diet contains more seeds, fruit and insects.[6]
- They have many natural predators, such as wolves, coyotes, owls, eagles, lynxes, and bears, though humans have caused the species to decline in number.[7]
