It is mentioned in Great Bear Lake that her fur is russet but turns white in snow-sky.

Great Bear Lake

Kallik steals a hare from her. Later, Kallik sees the fox glaring at her from a bush and she gives it some leftovers from her food. Kallik notes that her fur is russet, but will turn white in snow-sky.

Later the arctic fox follows Kallik around and they share prey which leads to Kallik thinking of her as a friend. When Kallik reaches Great Bear Lake, she realizes that the fox won't be able to go with her, and she says good-bye, hoping they will see each other again.

The Melting Sea

The arctic fox does not make an appearance in the book, but is mentioned by Kallik. Kallik is embarrassed when she mentions they were friends. Toklo laughs, thinking it was funny she was friends with a fox.
