Tigers are large cats, the biggest breed of cats in the world. They are barely mentioned in Seekers.
General Information[]
- Tigers are most commonly orange with black stripes, but sometimes white with black stripes. Rarely, they can be 'Golden Tabby' - the 30 odd tigers known like this have golden fur with darker golden stripes, with white markings on their faces, white underbellies and the back of their legs are also white.
- There is also a color called 'Snow-White' - only 13 or so tigers exist. Snow White tigers are almost completely white with barely visible markings. Reports of 'Black' and 'Maltese' tigers have been heard. Black tigers are said to be completely black, however they may have been mistaken for panthers. Maltese tigers are said to be a grayish blue with black stripes, but there is little evidence.
- They prey on deer, monkeys and other mammals. Tigers are often forced to hunt livestock in the wild, so farmers are shooting them because of it.
- This has contributed to their decline, along with habitat loss and poaching for their fur and bones. Scientists have discovered that the so-called 'medicine' in tiger bones and teeth does not actually work, but they continue to be hunted as an unworking remedy. As of 2012, there are as little as 3,100 tigers left in the wild, and three species (The Bali, Caspian and Java) are already extinct, and the South China tiger is on the top ten list of the world's most endangered animals with less then 100 left.
